Northern Fulmars – Fulmaris glacialis

The Northern Fulmar – Fulmaris glacialis – although similar in appearance to seagulls is in fact a true Procellaridae, making it more closely related to the albatross. Whereas seagulls come to land to drink fresh water, the fulmar drinks sea water and comes to land only to breed.

They don’t start breeding until they are 8 to 10 years old, they lay but one egg per year and there is documentation of fulmars still breeding at forty years of age. Brora has a nesting colony of these magnificent birds just two miles south along the coast.

You will find a few rather good photographs of the fulmars at the brora.biz website.

The Battle of Long Tan

The Battle of Long Tan was fought between the Australian Army and Viet Cong forces in a rubber plantation near the village of Long Tần, about twenty seven kilometres north east of Vung Tau, South Vietnam on 18 August 1966. It is arguably the most famous battle fought by the Australian Army during the Vietnam War.

The battle of Long Tan was the only major battle that the Australians were involved in during the war. It ensured that the Viet Cong were not able to operate in Phuoc Toy province in anything like major strength again.

Why do I write this? Well, my good friend Graham Parks, who served in Vietnam, sent me a lapel pin a few years ago to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, and it’s been sitting on my desk ever since. I finally figured it was time to let him know how much I still appreciate the gesture.

Take care Graham. The world is not worthy of you.

Canon Powershot SX120 IS

Wasn’t happy with my photographs and decided to buy a new camera. I’ve been testing my new Canon Powershot SX120 IS and so far I’m delighted with the results.

It is a 10 Megapixel camera with 10x optical zoom, image stabilisation and a few other nice things, including manual mode. I’ll be posting pictures taken with this thing in the coming days and weeks.

Cracking gold panning start to 2010

Had my first panning outing yesterday and I couldn’t have wished for a better start to the year. The weather was mild, and although the river was in a bit of a spate it was workable. Panned out a lovely little picker too!
