Winter Gold Panning

Winter gold panning is a different animal to summer gold panning, that’s for sure. Long warm days with low water levels are displaced by short days, constant spates and freezing water. But the gold is still there!

One advantage to freezing weather is that the water doesn’t run off the hill because it’s frozen and so the water levels can drop. Such was the case yesterday. Although the water was freezing and ice was forming in my gold pan, the water was low enough to be workable. Four hours in the water is about as much as I can handle at this time of year.

Bushcraft Magazine feature on Gold Panning

Bushcraft and Survival Skills Magazine has published a four page feature article on gold panning for which I was interviewed and to which I contributed. All the photographs, for example, were taken by me. Written by Olivia Beardsmore, who did a fabulous job, here is what the feature looks like.

If you would like a copy of the magazine you can buy it in Borders, Blacks or order it directly from their rather impressive web site – you’re looking for issue 18.

Bushcraft Magazine

Bushcraft magazine is the UKs first magazine dedicated wholly to bushcraft and outdoors survival. Written by experts it covers such topics as tracking, foraging, knives and axes, firelighting, wood lore and surviving in the wild. Well, as from next month they will also be covering gold panning! I’ve never been interviewed by a magazine before so it was a fun experience and I’m looking forward very much to reading the article in their January issue.

If you’d like more information on Bushcraft Magazine, check out their extremely impressive website. Better still, order the January issue! The magazine is available at Borders, Blacks and good army surplus stores.

A Winter Drive through the Strath of Kildonan

Thought you might enjoy sharing my first winter drive this year, which took me up the Strath of Kildonan for a day’s gold panning. Fun day out but my feet got cold working in the river!
