Story
During the assault of a hi-jacked aircraft, Jamie Gilmour befriends a young girl whose mother has been shot. Returning from a shopping trip, the back doors of a transit van burst open and guns are brandished. During the ensuing scuffles a mate is shot dead and Gilmour is taken hostage along with the girl.
With the American President’s State visit to Britain imminent, Whitehall finds itself greatly alarmed over the shooting and kidnapping of SAS soldiers and tasks Peter Ellis, an unconventional freelance operative, to investigate. From a dying man in a disused quarry, Ellis learns disturbing news that draws him into the shadowy world of the Illuminati, International Freemasonry and the Jesuits.

As an Operator I recognised many of the environments and notions of being on an op. I actually had a flashback due to this highly exciting story. Maciver is an ex-Para and it shows. Maciver has a way of writing that lets you experience and almost feel the environment. It was an amazing journey, a journey I had no way of leaving until it was finished. And even then I wanted it to continue. This one is standing among my favourite books on the subject of fiction based on Special Operations.

One of the most riveting books I have read in a long time. With an explosive start as Gilmour tackles the hijacking of an airplane, Maciver builds the tension with twists and turns that force you to read on. You’ll be glued to this book until the end! Maciver has a way with words that paints a unique picture allowing you to see the beauty of a Scottish glen as well as the ugliness of terrorism. This is a book that offers something for everyone, not only aficionados of Special Operations. I can’t wait for a sequel!

Maciver’s intimate familiarity with SAS operations is obvious throughout the story. Having spent 20 plus years in the Special Ops community (U.S.), I was impressed with the authors ability to articulate the strange thoughts that run through an individuals mind during times of stress. Many of the thoughts Gilmour has, are mine, at a different time or place. Maciver has captured the attitude and spirit of the Special Forces community. Something that is presented in the book is the idea that “Operators” have an angel or other great force looking over their shoulders. If a reader has any doubt about that, think back on Princess Di’s bodyguard, Mr Reese.
The action in this story is non stop. The action is all believable and plausable. Maciver’s description of the hero of the book, Jamie Gilmour, fits many fellow Spec Ops soldiers that I have worked with. He has them down to a “T”. The personal problems, the problems with authority, love, etc. This should be a winner for Maciver and I hope, the first of many more adventures to come.

One World quickly grabbed my attention starting out as it did in the midst of a hijacking with racing adrenaline and bullets whizzing. This story is brilliantly told through believable characters and military expertise tempered with reality. Things happen quickly as a frightening plot with international connections and well hidden secrets is cleverly unwound. As cars race along the motorway and the body count rises, the vulnerable side of these heroes who serve their country, and indeed the world, comes alive along with the unexpected.
An exciting novel that includes raw courage as well as brutality and savage terrorists, One World is a great read. I could not put this book down until I reached the end, which really says something because I often approach a book by reading the beginning and then skip to the final couple of chapters; this was a rare find that I wanted to experience just as it was. Author George Maciver has created a compelling tale and left me eagerly wanting to read more of his work.

I had the good fortune to edit a novel a while back. Called One World it is a tale of suspense and intrigue. Centred around the work of a handful of SAS operatives, it casts light on some highly clandestine activity that some would doubt is even taking place.
If you’d like a really good read this winter, do get it. You will find your beliefs challenged though, so be warned. I have a strong feeling that sooner or later this work will be made into a movie. The author George Maciver is a natural and I hope his first work will only be the first of many.
